Too Busy?

I’m too busy to exercise?

Remember what I said about working more efficiently and thinking more clearly? (When my three were young, I got into the habit of working out every morning. Now that I’m doing it again, I remember why.)

I’m too busy to eat properly.

I won’t lie. My eating habits are not what they should be, but even taking steps in the right direction has already begun to make me feel better. It just might do the same for you.

I’m too busy to read.

For the time being, my pleasure reading is on hold. However, I do have the privilege of editing other people’s work. I get to read several books while working. I like it!

I’m too busy to go out for coffee.

My problem isn’t grabbing a coffee and chatting for an hour. It’s grabbing a coffee and chatting for three. Hi, I’m Stephanie and once I get going, I like to talk…and talk and talk and talk.

I’m too busy to stop and listen to a friend in need.

My mind is always flitting here, there, and back again. And as I said, I do like to talk. When a friend needs a listening ear, I have to stop not only what I’m doing, but snag those runaway thoughts and listen, really listen. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I’m too busy to sit in the backyard with my spouse.

I’m glad I didn’t say this last night. My hubby works hard to make our gardens look lovely. He and the family bought me a hammock chair years ago. Every time I sit outside, I wonder why I don’t do it more often. I especially enjoy it in the evening when the garden lights pop on, one by one.

I’m too busy to play with my kids.

Mine, as you probably know, are grown. Two of them still live at home and it’s important to pay attention to them when they want to talk about something important – or nothing in particular. In this age of iThis and iThat, it’s still shows respect to give another our undivided attention. That is becoming harder and harder, but I hope it doesn’t become a lost art.

I’m too busy to sleep.

In my new, detailed schedule, I try to allot seven hours each night for sleep. Our physical, mental, and emotional well-being often hinge on the amount of sleep we get. And, like exercise, adequate sleep helps us think more clearly and work more efficiently.

I’m too busy to clean house.

Please refer to entries under “Confessions of a Horrible Housekeeper” above. (grin)

Walk, Run, Fly

Imagine

Three women

Out for a walk…

Yes, I know…this guy’s running

But we don’t do that.

(Kudos to those who do!)

At any rate,

My To Do list is longer than ever

So

I’ve decided to exercise

Every morning.

Why?

If I don’t do it then

I won’t do it later.

But why bother at all?

I start the day

With a sense of accomplishment.

I think more clearly.

I eat better by default.

Who wants to workout then eat sweet cereal?

(That’s rhetorical, by the way.)

I also work more efficiently

And

I’m sure my clients will be glad to hear that.

Do I want to lose a little weight?

More than a little actually.

But that’s not my main focus.

Do I want to tone up?

Most “women of a certain age” do.

The walking…

That’s literal.

The running…

Not so much.

And the flying…

That’s completely figurative

Unless I go to see my son out west

Or

Decide to take up

Skydiving or hang-gliding.

May 30 ROW Check-in

Before I begin my official check-in, I want to tell you something you may not know…

I appreciate you…yes, YOU!

And now for those goals…

Editing ~ Just got started on a friend’s novel. Loving it!

More editing ~ Giving a manuscript the last read-through…and still finding things. Sigh!

Even more editing ~ An online contact “introduced” me to an author looking for an editor for her YA manuscript. I just love networking!

Rewriting ~ I’m rewriting a short story for a fairly new client.

Ghostwriting ~ My client would like the manuscript short and to the point. I like it!

Office Job ~ I’ll let you know the verdict come Sunday.

And submitting…If you read Sunday’s check-in, you’ll know I asked for an externally imposed deadline. Thanks to Gene Lempp, I have one. (Thanks, Gene!) I will submit at least four pieces by the end of June – an average of one per week; I can do that.

To end, I’ll leave you with this pun-liner…

Today, be sure to do the WRITE thing!

Listen Up!

Your body might be trying to tell you something.

Below are some of the lessons I’m learning from my body. Maybe yours is trying to teach you some of the same things.

I enjoy milk on my cereal. There are milk and milk products in many of the foods I eat. However, last week I had a glass of milk (something I rarely have) and suffered for it. Weird! But yes, body, I’m listening.

Today my stomach was upset. I won’t even tell you what I ate yesterday, but suffice it to say it doesn’t appear on any healthy eating plan. Did I enjoy the taste of my numerous snacks? Yepper. Did I like feeling lousy? Not so much.

I often sit at the computer bleary-eyed. Hm, wonder why that is. Let’s see. It could be staying up too late when I have a specific wake-up time. It could also have to do with the lack of regular exercise. I can do something about both of these causes.

I don’t ache enough. Sound crazy? Yeah, I guess it does. But I know I’m not doing enough resistance training if I don’t even feel the twinges that say, “This is your muscle speaking. I am busy getting stronger.”

Hello, belly fat that didn’t used to be there. I’m not so much about the pant size or the number on the scale. However, my body will find it’s ideal weight and shape when I get sufficient cardio (from 30-60 minutes per day with an appropriately elevated heart rate) and resistance training (from three to four full-body workouts per week), when I drink more water (my ultimate aim would be from six to eight glasses per day) and eat well (no more hm-i-wonder-if-i-ate-anything-nutritious days). (I was approached today about starting a fitness group. Yep, definitely time to get my act together again.)

Oh, my! Are my knees stiff! Well, d’uh. You sit at the computer for hours on end, barely moving a muscle besides the ones in your eyes and the ones in your fingers. (I could actually get all that exercise accomplished if I took 15-30 minute breaks and got busy exercising.)

It is my goal this week to listen more carefully to my body and do the best I can to start heading in the right direction health and fitness-wise.

How about you?

Please remember these are only general tips. Only you and your doctor can determine what is the best course of action specifically for you.

Simply Finish

Deadlines are amazing! Well, at least I think they are…especially externally-imposed ones.

I needed that impending deadline to complete the requirements for my doula certification program to motivate me to make the last big push to get everything done. (I popped the package in the mail this week.)

When I have a deadline, I like to break up the work into bite-sized chunks and, as much as possible, evenly distribute the task over x number of days. A couple of times this week, I pushed through and got things done ahead of schedule. Such a sense of accomplishment! (I love crossing things off tomorrow’s To Do list.)

Last week, I was cleaning out my inbox when I came across on invitation to write a guest blog – dated back in February. I contacted Julie. One thing led to another and she asked me to write a four-part series to be published on her site each Monday for the next month. (Pop back at the first of the week and I’ll have the link to her site posted.) She gave me the deadline of writing a post once per week. I got them done in four days. (Don’t be too impressed. They’re personal experience pieces and came together quickly.)

If you read my ROW check-ins, you’ll notice I have a number of things circling in the queue. That’s why, when I was given the option of taking on a fairly brief editing job, I said yes and completed the project in a couple of days. It feels amazing to wrap up a project, even a less imposing one.

I’ve said it before, but the more I dive in and do what I’m supposed to, the more pumped I become and the more energy I have to do other projects.

And why on earth am I sharing this info with you? For a couple of reasons: 1) to encourage you to tackle that job you know you should do and “git er done”* and 2) to give credit where credit’s due (I am, by nature, an incredibly lazy individual. If it wasn’t for God’s work in my life, there is no way I would have these anecdotes to share. The glory is His alone.)

*If you need a chuckle today, check out the Urban Dictionary’s definition of this phrase.

May 27 ROW Check-in

Tasks accomplished…what a rush!

Build Business

Doula ~ looking to take on one to three new clients by the end of the year

Office Job ~ should hear about the Monday to Thursday position by Wednesday evening (Who needs sleep?)

Personal Trainer ~ I don’t plan to do anything with the certification at this point, but I passed the recert exam and just have to pay my annual fee and I’ll be good until June 2013, as long as I do my CPR recert in or before February.

Doula Certification Requirements

Everything’s in the mail. Whew! I’ll hear in the next four to six weeks if I’ve met the requirements. You’ll know the results come the next round. (Or you can listen for the hooting and hollering or loud sigh of exasperation. [grin])

Editing Goals

Editing Projects ~ forty-five page edit for a new client completed Friday/Saturday; another new-ish job has turned into a re-writing project (it’s fun to encourage new writers, but sometimes they need a little extra help); wrapping up one big project in time to start the next

Writing Projects ~ pitch needs a little tweaking; ghostwriting project has begun

Exercise & Fitness Goals

Eat better ~ Do baklava and gummies my son brought me from Japan count as eating better? Probably not.

Cardio ~ walked with exercise buddy twice last week

Resistance ~ twice; too tired tonight (Saturday) to do it a third time

Reading Goals

Reading to maintain my PTS certification ~ reading and exam DONE

Skills development ~ read a teeny tiny, itty bitty bit this week

Fiction ~ apologized to an author who’s PDF file I said I’d read and review; he said good-naturedly (I hope) he’ll have to track me down and beat me up

Submissions

Externally imposed deadlines really light a fire under me; I’m often ahead of schedule. Anyone want to give me a deadline for x number of submissions?

Writing Goals

Blogging ~ spinning my wheels with my own blog a little; considering looking into guest blogging more regularly

Other writing ~ ROFL

ROW-specific Goals

~ visit ten fellow ROWers blogs per week (doin’ not too bad)

Wings or Weights?

some people

give us

wings

others give us

weights

i prefer wings

however

i risk flying

high above

people and their problems

if i only make use

of my wings

if i don’t allow the weight

to take my focus

but simply keep me

earthbound

i can look around

and

see my fellow weight-bearers

empathize

and perhaps

help them become

power lifters

hurray

for wings

and weights

…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other…And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Confessions of an Enigma

big sigh of relief

last week i came to terms

that my house will never be

as clean and immaculate

as others

and then…

we made plans to have company

while they don’t care a smidge

about my domestic skills

(or lack thereof)

when someone comes over

i take the opportunity

to tidy up

at least a little

and that can be a good thing

however…

i could get used to this

seeing the top of the dining room table

having some place to put things

on the kitchen counter

not having to move things

out of the way

to turn on the TV

(stability balls interfere with the signal from the remote)

finding no hairballs in the corners

etc etc etc

but don’t worry

this is not the demise of yet another horrible housekeeper

just a blip in the radar

May 23 ROW Check-in

Victory and craziness…

Doula Certification Requirements

Thank you for all your support, my fellow ROWers, as I have pushed out the deadline time and time again. I’m only waiting on a second letter of recommendation and then I can get the package in the mail.

Build Business & Editing Goals

Editing Projects ~ started a new project Tuesday, hope to get it done a week from Friday; hoping to hear back from another client about a job that is almost complete – I hope; a third client will be sending me her manuscript in the next little while

Writing Projects ~ finalizing the pitch for a screenplay (will be done ahead of deadline); may be beginning a ghostwriting project today or tomorrow

Doula ~ hope to take on clients with estimated due dates every six to eight weeks (If one goes “early” and the other “late,” I want to be able to attend both births.)

Other ~ should hear about the Monday to Thursday job soon

Writing Goals

Blogging ~ puttering along PLUS I have the opportunity to guest blog a series for the next four Mondays – so much fun!

Other writing ~ “Some day, over the rainbow…”

Submissions

~ no long at the peak of Priority Mountain, but not quite relegated to the foothills just yet

Reading Goals

Reading for my doula certification course ~ DONE (Mind you, I should always be reading to solidify the things I’ve learned and add to my knowledge base.)

Reading to maintain my PTS certification ~ reading and exam to be done by Friday

Skills development ~ with a shelf full of books calling my name, I passed up “a great opportunity” to secure several helpful resources (My friend is ordering them. If they’re truly amazing, I’ll have to borrow them – and kick myself for not getting my own.)

Fiction ~ not a priority right now

Exercise & Fitness Goals

~ eating better

~ will have to get truly serious about cardio and resistance if I get the M-Th job

ROW-specific Goals

~ visit ten fellow ROWers blogs per week (doing well – now that this round is almost over [sigh])
