Hidden in Plain Sight

funny

the world changes

when viewed through the lens

a ten-minute walk

turns into thirty

every step

reveals something formerly hidden

in plain sight

slow down

get close

adjust the focus

a brand new world

right under my nose

a perfect reflection

on the pond

the tiniest of leaves

bursting forth

the sun shining through

a stand of cedars

a bird scolding me

for getting too close

flowering trees

whose fragile beauty

lasts such a short time

even dried leaves

and diseased bark

entice

so

my camera

my friend

we will go for another walk

very soon

Thankful

a list of things i’m thankful for

would fill my house, spill out the door

for safe beneath our roof live three

most precious treasures, dear to me

a husband of some thirty years

who shares my joy, my sorrow, tears

and two of our most valued ones

a much loved daughter and a son

our second son was home a while

it brought me joy and made me smile

extended fam’ly and my friends

what a wonder . . . never ends

and day by day i realize more

fellow Christians help me soar

when morning comes, i get to be

at a job that blesses me

and though it’s coming to a close

there’s new adventure i suppose

for waiting in the wings there are

several projects that so far

demand more time than i can spend

to see each one through to the end

so extra time to sit right here

to see the finish coming near

that would be so very good

doing things i know i should

so for right now i’ll look ahead

not with sorrow, not with dread

i’ll stand upon the rocky ledge

right up close, upon the edge

i’ll spread my wings and then i’ll fly

rising higher, touch the sky

“. . . do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV).

New Skies Ahead

Remember w-a-y back when I focused on flight? I began posting on a blog called “Free to Soar.” Today I want to revisit that theme. My current job is ending and I am looking ahead to new skies. Come, soar with me!

what a ride it has been

i began wondering

how i could ever keep up

and then i jumped from the precipice

some call it a leap of faith

and it was

and to my delight

it has been a wondrous adventure

the kind you’re sad to see come to an end

and yet

with the end of one flight

one adventure

the horizon spreads out before me

what new adventures will come my way

when the clouds of uncertainty clear

what will i see

where will i soar

what new skies are ahead

the misty eyes

and heavy heart

are giving way

for my future is certain

though i only catch glimpses

every now and then

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV).

 

For Today

I wrote this back in September of 2011. I came across it recently and wanted to encourage those of you who are going through dark times.

the night is dark before me

though the sunshine streams in my window

the panic is barely being held at bay

though i sit on my bed, apparent calm marking my demeanor

desperation and defeat assault me

until You speak

Why am I in this place?

For the good of others.

while the realization brings a clearing to the fog

depression isn’t driven back very far . . .

I then went on to list those burdens that weighed me down: debt, chores, discontent. But then I came to a realization.

today i need

grace for today

provision for today

strength for today

direction for today

peace for today

These days things are much better, but I still must rest in the Lord and trust Him for today.

Surrendered Dreams

Handing over

I-can-do-that dreams . . .

For not everything I can do

Should I

Nor do I have time for

Plus

There are so many other people

To come alongside

People to cheer on

People to encourage

What an honour

To pop in and out

Of a life

And make it better

If only a little

So thankful

For each opportunity

The spotlight can be fun

Every now and then

But to shine it

On another’s life

Now

That’s a privilege

“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10 ESV).

It’s Sunday and again it’s time

To talk about my goals in rhyme

From editing to writing and

Lots of other things at hand

From exercise and eating right

To staying up into the night

But hey, that’s not a goal of mine

It’s that darn thing that we call time

It always seems in short supply

And I suppose that I know why

It’s ‘cuz I sit and watch TV

When maybe that just shouldn’t be

It’s not too bad a little while

For family time and lots of smiles

But my computer sits and calls

Not to mention workout balls

So, I guess it’s time to think

What should float and what should sink

What goals to scratch, what goals to keep

But for now, it’s time to sleep . . .
