Confessions of the Temporary Tidy

We have the privilege of visiting with friends tomorrow before they head back to the mission field in Indonesia.

I so love that they’re taking the time to hang out with us for a while. I also know they don’t care in the least about this horrible housekeeper’s domestic habits.

However, I always take advantage of the opportunity when company’s coming to give myself a kick in the backside. (At least I think I can still do that, but I’ll save the experimentation until another time.)

It truly is ironic. Just this week I decided to settle into the this-is-how-we-live-and-it’s-okay mindset, and then we make plans to get together with our friends. Sigh!

For now, the table is clear. Amazing!

The dishes are almost caught up and much of the clutter on the counter has been cleared away. Put it all away? You’re too funny.

My daughter is going to put away the clean dishes, and my hubby ~ bless his heart ~ scoured our impossible-to-clean bathtub. (We really need a new one.)

I swept and Swiffered the kitchen, hall, and entryway.

If you’re not already sitting down, you probably should…

I even vacuumed the main floor and the stairs.

Sounds impressive, right? (Unless, of course, “clean freak” and “immaculate” describe your style.)

Well, there is a downside.

I get snippy when I’m cleaning.

The more I do, the more I realize there is to do.

I’ve been around the block enough times to know the current semi-clean, semi-tidy state of the main floor is a temporary occurrence…

Unless, of course, we have company on a regular basis.

Hm…

(I do enjoy it being clean and tidy. I just wish I could afford a housekeeper and a chef. Then, I’d be set.)

Confessions of Clutter

As you know, if you’ve read this blog, 1) my housekeeping skills will win no awards, and 2) we have way too much stuff.

Let me take you on a virtual tour…

Welcome to our front porch – the railing of which is pulling away, don’t know why.

This is my front hall – and yes, that is drywall against the wall and a jug of water from my son’s camping trip last year – or was it the year before?

To your left, you’ll see what is loosely referred to as the dining room. We rarely eat here. Therefore, it’s not so bad that you can’t see the top of the table. (Hey, it’s a flat surface and therefore, fair game.) And yes, my computer is tucked in the corner facing the wall – and the TV in the next room.

At first glance, you would call it the living room…or is it the art studio (my daughter’s art table is in there, bearing drawings she’s currently working on)…or is it the gym (as indicated by the two stability balls and various dumbbells, yoga mats, etc.)?

Now, back through the dining room to the front hall. If you follow me down the hall to the kitchen…remember not to bump into the drywall…

Here we are in the kitchen. Yes, I have counters, silly. What do you think is holding up my dishes and slow cooker and various foodstuffs?

And through this door, you’ll find the spare bedroom/pantry/junk room.

Back down the hall. First door on the left, our itsy bitsy bathroom. It’s not bad; we only need a new tub, sink, toilet, and flooring…oh, yeah, and a new medicine cabinet.

Wanna see the second floor? No, you don’t want to go through the second door on the left. That leads to the basement. My rule: It’s my husband’s domain. As long as nothing will spontaneously combust, I don’t really care.

The second floor has a big landing…and that’s why there is an entertainment unit right in front of you bearing towels and boxes of photographs and bedding and the dress I wore when I was a baby…Don’t ask.

To your left is my daughter’s room, full but very tidy actually. She’s related by blood…honest.

Next to her room is my hubby’s office/our son’s room. Since he’s decided to rent a place in SK with a couple of his buddies, his bed is going to be moved downstairs to the spare bedroom after we replace the carpet and tidy it up. We will pack up his stuff and send what he wants to his new place, chuck what he doesn’t want, and store what he won’t have room for.

Continuing on…I love our upstairs bathroom – except for the fact that we have zilch water pressure and have to shower in the downstairs tub (remember the one that needs replacing?).

Next to it is the laundry room/storage room. It’s fairly well organized, but I’m sure there’s lots I could get rid of.

And then comes the master bedroom. I recently spent some time in there, but it still needs a lot of work. What’s that outside the door? That would be the second floor heater we don’t use anymore. We’ll get rid of it one day. No rush. We’ve only been here ten years.

Up those stairs? That would be – insert snooty voice here – the loft (aka our eldest’s room). He keeps it in pretty good shape…most of the time. Not to worry, I only have to see it when I take him supper. (He works midnights and I usually offer to make something for him when he gets home in the morning.)

My mom once said, “You need a bigger house.”

I said, “Nah, we’d just spread out more and fill it up.

Decluttering…a priority. Mentally, at least. I’ll keep you posted.

Confessions of Unattained Goals

I’m trying to think of how to make today’s post lighthearted, if not humorous.

Think. Think. Think. As they used to say in the candy bar commercial, “That’s all I ever do.”

Goal – Declutter

Obstacles – Laziness; busyness; lethargy; and TOO MUCH STUFF (I guess that’s the reason I want to declutter.)

Goal – Keep the main floor tidy.

Obstacles – That would be my tendency to use the dining room table as a catch-all. And have I mentioned TOO MUCH STUFF?

Goal – Keep the kitchen reasonably tidy.

Obstacles – Laziness, busyness, and that crazy habit called eating.

Goal – Have clean and tidy bathrooms

Obstacles – It isn’t too hard to keep the upstairs bathroom clean. There isn’t enough water pressure to have a shower. The downstairs bathroom, on the other hand, gets used often because it does have adequate water pressure. The sad things are a tub surround and bathtub that cannot be scrubbed clean and, currently, no means to replace them. (Not complaining. Just sayin’.)

Goal – Have a relaxing, inviting master bedroom.

Obstacles – My hubby, the collector – of odds and ends he empties from his pockets at the end of the workday, crunched up Kleenex, and a wide variety of clothes (mostly dirty…I think). Okay, so before you think it’s all Dave’s fault, there would be that pile of my things just inside the door and piles of books and magazines and accumulated dust on the headboard. Sigh!

Goal – Paint the walls.

Obstacles – Lack of time; lack of funds; a fear that once we start we will see all the things that need repairing (It happens when you have a house that’s over 80 years old and construction done by people who obviously had no training or skills in that area.)

Am I complaining? Absolutely not. I am thankful for our house, our in-need-of-painting-and-repair, overstuffed, untidy house.

And just so you know, our friends are welcome here anytime. And with an hour’s notice, it might even look reasonable…if you don’t open any closed doors.

Good News/Bad News

Good news…Most of the presents are ready to go.

Bad news…The wrapping stuff is still in the living room – where’s it’s been for weeks.

Good news…My daughter washed a sink-load of dishes yesterday.

Bad news…You could never tell.

Good news…I cleaned off the table a few days ago.

Bad news…Yeah, I really don’t have to tell you – it’s pretty much covered again.

Good news…I’ve been doing more work and less social networking.

Bad news…No, I didn’t say HOUSEwork.

Good news…I keep gathering the things that are lying around and putting them in boxes. At least that way I can stack them.

Bad news…I have no idea where all this other stuff that is now lying around came from. Plus, some of those papers I neatly filed away probably need my attention.

Good news…I found Mandarin oranges in individual containers. Yum!

Bad news…Stepping in the juice I spilled and walking down the hall without taking my shoes off makes for sticky footprints.

Good news…I have a home and a family to care for.

More good news…I will forever be thankful, cluttered tables, missing paperwork, sticky floors, and all!
